I read somewhere that you can't spread herpes unless the blisters are present, but I read somewhere else recently that you can always spread it. I've recently had intercourse with my new partner; we'd been drinking so we forgot a condom and i'm really worried that i've spread it.

Also, is there any way of knowing which strain you have without getting tested? I heard that only one strain is permanent but I don't know if that's true. I've had blisters present on both my genitals and mouth, and I've only had two outbreaks, the first of which was a little over a year ago in which I got a very high fever, and the second began today, and I feel like I have a headcold.

both strains of the herpes virus will be with you for life, neither of them go away but may end up less noticeable and you may have less outbreaks.

It is possible to spread Herpes when there are no symptoms but studies show it's less likely. So if you've had unprotected intercourse your partner should keep an eye out for even slight bumps, cuts, or burning sensations.

As far as knowing which of the herpes viruses you've contracted it's impossible to tell with out a test.
